Citi Performing Arts Center Gets $151K to Launch ArtWeek

May 23, 2013 — Citi Performing Arts Center, which operates the Wang, Shubert, and Emerson Colonial theatres in Boston’s theater district, announced that it has been awarded a $151,368 grant to support ArtWeek, a twice-a-year series of cultural events and experiences that will launch this fall.

The grant, from ArtPlace America, a collaboration of leading national and regional foundations, banks and federal agencies, was one of 54 awarded nationally—and the only one in Massachusetts—to nonprofits that were cited as “an exceptional example of creative placemaking.”

ArtWeek Boston, involving museums, performing, artistic communities, and others will run Sept. 27 – Oct. 6, and then again next spring. The first year will primarily focus on Boston and Cambridge with the goal of expanding statewide and eventually across the country.

“With ArtWeek, we can use the arts to strengthen our local economy,” said Josiah A. Spaulding, Jr., president and CEO of the Citi Performing Arts Center. “Mayor Menino and the City of Boston is an invaluable partner in ArtWeek’s neighborhood engagement strategy, and working with the Greater Boston Convention and Visitors Bureau and Massachusetts Department of Tourism, we are excited about ArtWeek’s potential on regional, national, and international levels.”

“ArtPlace America recognizes the central role arts and cultural activities can have in the revitalization of American cities,” said Rip Rapson, chair of ArtPlace America’s Presidents’ Council. “With this grant award ArtPlace America is directing individual project support to scores of creative, high-impact projects throughout the country.”

The 54 organizations that received grants were selected from more than 1,200 applications. Inquiries came from all 50 states as well as the District of Columbia. Grant amounts range from $750,000 to $33,000 with an average grant size of just over $280,000.

ArtWeek Modeled on Restaurant Week

Modeled loosely on Restaurant Week, all ArtWeek events and experiences will use 'prix fixe’ prices of $20.13, $40.13, or free of charge.

ArtWeek events will include:

  • A historic home in the area will host an onsite sit-down dinner where actors in period costume are also dinner guests representing different periods in the house’s history while a local musical group provides a musical course.

  • A ballet company hosts multiple one-hour sessions of yoga workouts in their rehearsal studio, with professional dancers also taking the classes.

  • A local theatre troupe, preparing for its next production, will invite members of the public to contribute to the canvas which will be the backdrop on the set.

  • A puppet theatre/children’s theatre will team with a pediatrician’s office to do skits and short stories related to the importance of a healthy diet, play, and other important health messages.

  • A team of local artists commissioned by a neighborhood association will devise a public art project that involves up-cycled products.
Nonprofits (501(c)(3) organizations), individual artists, or businesses acting as a fiscal or planning agent with an artist or arts organization are eligible to apply to be included as an ArtWeek event.
