Cape Cod Foundation Names Marcom Officer

March 17, 2017 — The Cape Cod Foundation, based in Yarmouthport, recently announced that it has appointed Joanna Christopher as its marketing and communications officer.

Christopher will work closely with President and CEO Kristin O’Malley to develop and implement a marketing and communications strategy that informs the Cape community about the resources and opportunities available, and encourage individuals and organizations to financially support The Cape Cod Foundation.

“Joanna brings more than 30 years of marketing and communications experience and a lifetime of love for Cape Cod to the foundation,” O’Malley said. “She’s a natural fit for our small and mighty team, and we are so excited to welcome her.”

Before starting her own agency in 2016, Christopher served as director of marketing for the Cape Symphony for four years. Prior to that, she led the marketing/communications efforts for Snow’s Home and Garden and Snow’s Fuel Company in Orleans for almost 20 years.

Christopher also was editor of the Best Read Guide: Cape Cod, a local publication for vacationers, and helped produce several franchise publications in Savannah, Ga., Hilton Head, S.C., and Tennessee’s Smoky Mountain Region.

Christopher said her work with several nonprofit organizations inspired her to join the foundation’s in-house team part-time.

“It’s all about impact,” she said. “The foundation manages hundreds of charitable funds and helps distribute millions of dollars back into the Cape community every year for health and human services, environmental preservation, educational programs and scholarships, arts and cultural opportunities, and community and economic development. It’s an incredible story to tell.”

Christopher earned a bachelor’s degree in communications-journalism from Stephens College in Columbia, Mo.

Since it was established in 1989, the foundation has distributed more than $60 million in grants and scholarships. In 2016, the foundation distributed $2.1 million in grants and $780,000 in scholarships. Today the foundation manages more than 250 individual charitable funds, many of which donors established to address a specific problem or area of concern or to address evolving challenges.

For the year ending Dec. 31, 2015, the foundation reported $1.3 million in revenue, gains, and other support, net of a $1.4 million investment loss and $2.4 million in contributions, and $3.8 million in expenses, according to its most recently available financial statement.
