Comm. Foundation for Nantucket Grants $160K to 22 Nonprofits

July 20, 2017 — The Community Foundation for Nantucket recently announced that it awarded $160,475 to 22 local nonprofits that provide services related to child care, diversity, education, health and nutrition, housing, mental health, and youth and recreation.

Margaretta Andrews, executive director of the Community Foundation for Nantucket, said, “It is our honor to support the incredible work being done every day by these organizations. The Community Foundation is Nantucket’s social impact partner that is in touch with the community’s greatest needs, and helps people and organizations work together to fill the gaps so everyone feels good about improving lives.”

The following nonprofits received grants:

CHILDCARE AND EDUCATION: $17,000 awarded to
  • Egan Maritime Institute – For Sea of Opportunities with Nantucket Public Schools
  • Friends of Nantucket Public Schools – For a motivational speaker series
  • Nantucket Book Foundation – For PEN/Faulkner Writers in Schools
  • Nantucket Island Safe Harbor for Animals – For the Humane Education Program
  • Small Friends on Nantucket – For extended hours in infant room
DIVERSITY INITIATIVES: $15,000 awarded to
  • Linda Loring Nature Foundation – For translation services for nature trails
  • Nantucket Community School – For Ready Set Read Program and Parental Empowerment Series
  • Nantucket Music Center – For Brazilian and Bulgarian dance programs
FOOD/NUTRITION: $8,000 awarded to
  • Nantucket Food Panty – For fresh food produce program
HEALTH/MEDICINE: $13,000 awarded to
  • Health Imperatives – For immigrant and community engagement initiatives, increased health, nutrition, and family services, and a bilingual reproductive health counselor
  • Nantucket Cottage Hospital – For Be Well Children’s Health
HOUSING: $50,000 awarded to
  • Habitat for Humanity – For capacity building & HVAC systems for new homes
  • Housing Nantucket – For public education and media outreach programs
  • Housing Nantucket – For Community Investment Tax credit program
  • Nantucket Food, Fuel, & Rental Assistance – For short-term rental assistance
MENTAL HEALTH/SUBSTANCE ABUSE: $49,975 awarded to
  • A Safe Place – For support for a full-time trauma therapist
  • Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention – For family awareness program
  • Artists Association of Nantucket – For Healing through the Creative Process
  • Fairwinds – For Professional Development Institute
  • Gosnold Inc. – For drug prevention training for families
YOUTH AND RECREATION: $11,500 awarded to
  • Nantucket Community Sailing – For Boys & Girls Club sailing and water-sport classes
  • Nantucket Dreamland Foundation – For children's theater program
  • Nantucket STAR – For sensory art and cross fit programs
