Project Place 50th Anniversary Gala Raises $1.3M

Project Place, a Boston-based nonprofit that provides employment, housing, and supportive services to homeless and low-income individuals, announced that it recently raised a record-setting $1,300,000 at its Open Door Gala, held to celebrate the organization's fiftieth anniversary.

Project Place, which said it had aimed to raise $1,000,000, will use the funds to create more job opportunities for clients through its social enterprises over the next three years and sustain current programming.

Founded in 1967, Project Place began as a dedicated safe haven for runaway teenagers, especially at-risk and drug-addicted youth. In the 1980s, Project Place shifted its role in the community by serving adults and adding drop-in and referral services, including legal services, life skills, advocacy, information and counseling. Today, it annually serves more than 1,400 individuals struggling with homelessness and poverty.

Athletic Events on Track to Raise Millions for Dana-Farber

C&S Charities today announced that it has raised $225,000 for the Jimmy Fund/Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston through its Tee Up for Kids charity golf outing. The event, which was held on Aug. 1 and 2, hosted more than 1,000 golfers on four courses in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont.

Meanwhile, organizers of the annual Pan-Mass Challenge, a Needham-based nonprofit that organizes the country’s largest athletic fundraising event, hosted its annual cycle fundraiser held last weekend, aiming to raise $48 million for Dana-Farber. Last year's event raised $46 million.

Nonprofit Employers Avoid Onerous Health Care Assessment

Gov. Charlie Baker recently signed into law an employer health care assessment that is lower than one originally proposed which, according to the Massachusetts Nonprofit Network (MNN), the state's nonprofit trade association, "does not unfairly penalize nonprofits whose employees receive health insurance from other non-public sources."

The original proposal called for employers to pay as much as $2,000 per employee on spousal, parental, veterans, or Medicare coverage. According to MNN, the new assessment includes the following:
  • A Jan. 1, 2018, effective date with a sunset two years after implementation.
  • For employers with six or more employees, an increase to a fee they already pay, the employer medical assistance contribution (EMAC), of $26 per employee annually.
  • For employers with six or more employees who have employees on MassHealth or ConnectorCare, an additional charge of up to $750 for each employee receiving those benefits (the assessment is calculated at 5% of the first $15,000 of annual pay).
  • Two years of unemployment insurance relief, estimated to save employers a total of $344 million in 2018 and 2019.

Theater Offensive Chosen for National Arts Equity Initiative, Gets $50K

The Theater Offensive (TTO), a Boston performing arts nonprofit that presents the diversity of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender lives, announced it has been selected for inclusion in the second cohort of Leveraging A Network for Equity (LANE), a national initiative that aims strengthen the financial and organizational health of organizations within the network.

TTO will receive $50,000 in organizational support up front, and have the opportunity to access an additional $500,000 in funding over the next four years through LANE.

LANE is a collaborative program administered by the National Performance Network/Visual Artists Network (NPN/VAN) in partnership with Nonprofit Finance Fund and with support from The Andrew E. Mellon Foundation. It includes substantial general operating support, recovery capital, change capital, technical assistance, and access to a team of consultants to help groups mitigate the risk of experimenting with new possibilities.

TTO Artistic Director Abe Rybeck said, “We're so honored to be among this group of outstanding organizations! It is profoundly touching that national peers were polled and expressed that The Theater Offensive is critical to the field at large. The LANE initiative will help build a sustainable future for The Theater Offensive."
