Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod Gets $83K to Build Homes in Dennis

Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod in Yarmouth Port, a nonprofit that builds homes for families in need, recently was awarded $83,970 for its affordable housing initiative in Dennis.

The funding came from Cape Cod Five which worked with the nonprofit to participate in the Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston's annual competitive grant program.

“We are keenly aware of the need for accessibility to housing of all different types for residents of all walks of life to help our communities thrive,” said Dorothy Savarese, president and CEO of Cape Cod Five. “Supporting affordable housing projects is vital to the sustainability of our region and helping our local families continue to live and work in our communities.”

Cape Cod Five will administer the grant and provide construction financing for the affordable housing initiative, which will consist of three new homes. One of the homes will be targeted to a family earning at or below 60%percent of the area median income, while the other two homes will be targeted to families at or below 50 percent of the area median income. Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod will partner with the selected families to build the new homes and will provide a comprehensive series of homebuyer education seminars and financial empowerment workshops for the new homeowners.

Cape Cod Military Support Foundation Gets Surprise $20K Donation

The Cape Cod Military Support Foundation, a Falmouth nonprofit that provides aid and assistance to military personnel and their families during times of critical need, recently received a surprise $20,000 donation to support its ongoing work.

The donation was given to foundation president Don Cox by Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots, on the field at Gillette Stadium ahead of a Patriots game earlier this month, in connection with Cox being named New England Patriots Difference Maker of the Year.

“We encourage everyone to volunteer and like to highlight those who do the most to positively impact their communities. It’s nice to give credit to those who are most deserving and to reward the nonprofits they represent,” said Kraft, as reported by CapeCod.com.

The foundation provides programs and services that support the military service members and families of U.S. Air Force, U.S. Air National Guard, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Army and U.S. Army National Guard and their families who are assigned to the Joint Base Cape Cod (JBCC) and US Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England Woods Hole.

Just-a-Start Gets Funding to Acquire, Renovate Affordable Apartments

Just a Start Corporation, a Cambridge nonprofit community development corporation, recently secured $22.6 million in financing from MassHousing for the acquisition and renovation of 112 affordable apartments in Cambridge.

The funding includes new construction of a 16-unit building at 50 York St. that was destroyed in a devastating, 10-alarm fire in December 2016.

MassHousing said the financing allows Just-A-Start to invest $17 million in a comprehensive renovation and modernization of the scattered-site portfolio, which consists of 20 low-rise, mid-rise, and townhouse apartment buildings, located on 10 sites throughout Cambridge. All 112 rental units will be affordable to households earning at or below 60% of the area median income, which is $62,040 for a family of four

New Mass. Nonprofits Invited to Apply for Grants

Forest Foundation, through its FF Ventures initiative, has invited grant proposals from current undergraduate college students and recent college graduates (age 30 and under) who have created an emerging or new nonprofit in Massachusetts, to aid in the start-up and/or continued momentum of the early stages.

"Early grant funding is rare and critical to the frail stability of developing programs," the foundation said. "FF Ventures identifies and invests in young leaders during this fragile growth period, hopefully bridging the program from idea, creation, start-up to full sustainability"

Grants up to $10,000 will be awarded, with preference given to programs impacting populations within the United States. Nonprofits that apply must have a current annual budget under $125,000 and have current or pending 501c3 status, or fiscal agency status.
