Eastern Bank Gives $1.5M to 151 Massachusetts Nonprofits

August 9, 2018 — Eastern Bank this week announced it has awarded $10,000 to each of 151 Massachusetts nonprofits throughout the South Shore, North Shore, MetroWest, Merrimack Valley, and Greater Boston that address a range of issues that focus on helping women, such as sexual assault, domestic violence, human trafficking, health care, pay equity, and senior management and board representation.

Bob Rivers, chairman and CEO of Eastern Bank, said the grants "aim to enhance the lives of our neighbors and contribute to real progress around the advancement of women in our local communities."

According to the bank, in Massachusetts, women earn 83 cents for every dollar paid to men. African-American women nationwide earn 64 cents for every dollar earned by white men, and Latinas, only 56 cents.

In addition, it noted that a woman is assaulted every nine seconds in the U.S. and one in three women has been a victim of physical brutality by an intimate partner, making intimate partner violence the single greatest cause of injury to women.

Project Place in Boston, which provides skills and resources to help homeless and low-income individuals find employment and housing, will use its grant to its social enterprise program Working Opportunities for Women, which enables women with children, especially women who are homeless, to gain meaningful employment experience while becoming more financially independent.
