Mass. Alliance of Portuguese Speakers Golf Event Raises $40K

September 29, 2018 — The Massachusetts Alliance of Portuguese Speakers, a Cambridge-based nonprofit that provides health and social services to Portuguese speakers and other communities in the area, as well as in Framingham and Lowell, announced that it raised $40,000 at its first Chip-In for Charity Golf Tournament earlier this week.

The funds will support the Massachusetts Alliance of Portuguese Speakers (MAPS) Senior Center in Cambridge.

Approximately 100 community members, business leaders and supporters participated in the event, held at the Juniper Hill Golf Course, in Northborough. The fundraising tournament also included a silent auction, a 50/50 raffle, and a lunch banquet.

Sponsors of the first Annual Chip-In for Charity Golf Tournament included Auxzillium IT Services & Solutions, Brite Builders Incorporated, Couto Management Group, East Cambridge Savings Bank, Naveo Credit Union, S & F Concrete, and the Sardinha Family Trust/Dunkin’ Donuts Franchise.

The MAPS Senior Center in Cambridge is a linguistically and culturally competent space designed to prevent isolation and promote wellness through case management and daily social and recreational activities, including exercise classes, arts and crafts, and nutritional meals.

MAPS created in 1993 by the merger of two agencies: the former Somerville Portuguese American League (SPAL) and Cambridge Organization of Portuguese Americans (COPA), which had served area Portuguese speakers separately since 1970.

In a major effort to build community capacity, MAPS joined with Suffolk University during the first decade of the new millennium to initiate a certificate program in management of health and human services. The program graduated 11 professionals in its first year alone and more in its second year.

Other community-building efforts have included collaborations with the Brazilian American Chamber of Commerce, the Brazilian Women’s Group, Brazilian Workers Center and Cape Verde Cares, with MAPS providing various types of expertise and assistance to help those nonprofit organizations.
