Comm. Foundation of SE Mass. Grants $529K to Nonprofits

December 17, 2018 — The Community Foundation of Southeastern Massachusetts last week announced that it granted $529,291 to nonprofit organizations that serve area residents for a range of purposes, including operating support, health services, education, and land preservation.

John Vasconcellos, president of the Community Foundation of Southeastern Massachusetts, said, “The Community Foundation is proud to be the partner of choice for creating philanthropic impact in the Southcoast region.”

He also noted that the grants "recognize the important work being done by several trusted and innovative nonprofit organizations in those areas that matter to the donor but also resonate for our community: arts and culture, the environment, economic opportunity, and health and human services.”

Receiving the funds were the following:
  • Boys & Girls Club of Greater New Bedford/Wareham, New Bedford: $7, 500 for theNew Bedford Wellness Initiative
  • Buttonwood Park Zoo, New Bedford: $25,000 for the Nature Connection Education Center
  • Buzzards Bay Coalition, New Bedford: $50,000 for land preservation
  • Child & Family Services, New Bedford: $5,000 for the Caring Network
  • Children’s Advocacy Center of Bristol County, Fall River: $5,000 for therapeutic journaling
  • Coastline Elderly Services, New Bedford: $5,000 for the LGBT Supper Club
  • Community Boating Center, New Bedford: $3,000 for operating support
  • Dream Out Loud, New Bedford: $3500 for operating support
  • Global Learning Charter Public School, New Bedford: $80,000 for curriculum development and technology needs
  • Greater New Bedford RVTHS, New Bedford: $12,500 for mentoring program
  • Leadership SouthCoast, New Bedford: $3,200 for operating support
  • Max Warburg Courage Curriculum, Inc., New Bedford: $10,000 for matching grant
  • New Bedford Art Museum, New Bedford: $4,000 for operating support
  • New Bedford Historical Society, New Bedford: $1,000 for Abolition Row Park
  • New Bedford Symphony Orchestra, New Bedford: $27,000 for Learning in Concert program, operating support
  • New Bedford Whaling Museum, New Bedford: $112,000 for operating support
  • NorthStar Learning Centers, New Bedford: $6,091 for operating support, summer jobs
  • PACE, Inc., New Bedford: $10,000 for playground construction
  • Reach Out & Read, New Bedford: $12,500 for operating support
  • Sippican Historical Society, Marion: $15,000 for Elizabeth Taber statue, operating support
  • Southcoast Health Systems, New Bedford: $25,000 for operating support
  • SouthCoast LGBTQ Network, New Bedford: $7,500 for Winter Film Series, PRIDE event
  • Teach for America, Boston: $2,500 for Sponsor-A-Teacher New Bedford
  • The Livestock Institute of Southern New England, Westport: $5,000 for operating support
  • UMass Dartmouth, Dartmouth: $50,000 for College Now program, Clemente Scholars, Upward Bound
  • United Way of Greater New Bedford, New Bedford: $4,000 for mini-grants program
  • WHALE, New Bedford: $20,000 for historic preservation
  • Women’s Fund of Southeastern Massachusetts, New Bedford: $5,000 for lifework project
  • YWCA of Southeastern Massachusetts, New Bedford: $11,000 for repairs at “A Woman’s Place,” Financial Literacy Program, operating support
  • Zeiterion Theater, New Bedford: $2,000 for operating support
The foundation said it awarded grants totaling $691,000, which included grants to public schools, the Town of Marion to support property tax relief for residents in need, and other organizations.
