Barr Foundation Grants $7.7M to 27 Massachusetts Nonprofits

June 27, 2019 — The Barr Foundation, based in Boston, the largest private foundation in Massachusetts, this week announced that it granted $7,775,000 to 27 Massachusetts nonprofits to support ongoing programs and capacity building, as well as new initiatives.

The Barr Foundation made the following grants:
  • Alternatives for Community and Environment: $600,000 to provide clean energy and mobility program support

  • Beyond Walls: $75,000 to support revenue and development plans and complementary marketing materials

  • Blackstone Academy Charter School: $500,000 for the implementation of a redesigned school model for Blackstone Academy Charter School as part of the Education Program’s regional project aimed at nurturing the development of high school models that leverage the wider learning ecosystem

  • Boston Educational Development Foundation: $150,000 for the redesign of the school model for Boston Adult Technical Academy, a school in Boston Public Schools

  • Boston Foundation: $290,000 to support Action for Boston Children Working Group

  • Citizens' Housing and Planning Association: $30,000 to support transition planning for its Massachusetts Smart Growth Alliance program

  • Community Labor United: $1,000,000 to support transit justice advocacy

  • Conservation Law Foundation: $2,000,000 to provide program support for the Transportation for Massachusetts Coalition

  • EdVestors: $50,000 to support EdVestor’s new leadership, board development, and strategic planning in FY20

  • Emerson College: $80,000 to conduct consumer research and develop a new marketing strategy

  • Global Arts Live: $150,000 to launch the organization’s new brand

  • GreenRoots: $40,000 to support strategic planning

  • Harvard College: $600,000 to support health benefits analysis for the Transportation and Climate Initiative

  • Interaction Institute for Social Change: $25,000 to support IISC's 25th Anniversary Celebration on June 11th, 2019 at the Equity Catalyst Level.

  • Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum: $75,000 to conduct Phase 1 of a two-phase consultant-led DEI assessment.

  • Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art Foundation: $500,000 to support Assets for Artists to strengthen its core professional development and asset-building services and to implement key strategic plan priorities

  • Merck Family Fund: $50,000 to support non-partisan research and analysis on mass transit infrastructure costs

  • Mothers Out Front: $200,000 to support building a movement of mothers in the region working for clean energy and climate action

  • Mystic River Watershed Association: $700,000 to support climate resilience, greenways and waterfront activities and $55,000 to provide supplemental funding for regional climate resilience in the Mystic River Watershed

  • Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway Conservancy: $100,000 to implement its new communications plan

  • The Silk Road Project: $40,000 to pilot Silkroad Seeds

  • Social Innovation Forum: $5,000 to support a conversation event on reimagining the nonprofit-funder relationship, featuring Vu Le. Any tickets associated with the event will be donated back for SIF to use at its discretion.

  • Theater Offensive: $190,000 to support a comprehensive feasibility study for procuring a dedicated performance space

  • Toxics Action Center: $30,000 to support Toxics Action Center's rebranding process

  • Trustees of Reservations: $200,000 to develop signature, equitable, and climate-resilient parks on the Boston waterfront

  • USGBC Massachusetts Chapter: $30,000 to support education and strategic communications on the costs and benefits of green buildings

  • WalkBoston: $10,000 to provide support for WalkBoston's Walking-Around Money Fund
Another $500,000 was awarded to an out-of-state organization, Teach for America, to support Teach for America’s Massachusetts region.
