Cape Cod Foundation Raises $104K via Ride for the Fallen
September 2, 2019 The Cape Cod Foundation, based in South Yarmouth, last week announced that it raised $104,000 via its tenth annual Big Nicks Ride for the Fallen to support local military families and veterans.
Last year's Ride raised $69,000.
Hundreds of motorcyclists participated in the event, held July 21, which was viewed by thousands of people.
The event also honored the memory of seven members of the Jarheads Motorcycle Club who were killed in a crash in New Hampshire in June.
The 35-mile route began at the Barnstable County Correctional Facility and ended at Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School in South Yarmouth
Lead sponsors of this year's Ride were Craig Madore Carpentry and Jarheads Motorcycle Club of Cape Cod.
Other sponsors included Barnstable Sheriff; Baskins True Value; Cape Cod Canal Crew, Iron Order MC; Cape Country 104; Cycle Services, Hyannis; Dennis Public Market, Dennis; Franey Medical Labs; Kaleidoscope Imprints, Yarmouth; Massachusetts Motorcycle Association; Training Wheels; Yarmouth Country Fest; Yarmouth Police Relief Fund; and Ziggy's Auto Specialists, Hyannis.
It was started to memorialize U.S. Marine Nicholas Xiarhos who was killed in Afghanistan in 2009 while going to the rescue of his fellow Marines in combat.
Steven Xiarhos, Nicks father, said, Each year, I am overcome by the love and gratitude our community shows for those who have servedand continue to serveour country. Through their generosity, we are able to bring a variety of resources and opportunities to those who have made it home.
The memorial fund provides financial assistance to local military families and wounded warriors and supports numerous programs for veterans throughout the community. The fund also supports a scholarship at Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School, Xiarhos alma-mater.
