Mass. Bar Foundation Grants $2.6M to 59 Bay State Nonprofits
Mass Bar Foundation

September 17, 2021 — The Massachusetts Bar Foundation today announced it awarded $2,612,782 to 89 legal aid programs conducted by 59 nonprofit organizations across the state through its annual Interest on Lawyers' Trust Account grants program.

The Massachusetts Bar Foundation (MBF) said that despite a 25% decline in revenues from the trust account, it elected to draw from reserves to ensure this year’s funding remained essentially level with last year.

Noting that grantee organizations “have been on the front lines these past sixteen months helping Massachusetts families” respond to the coronavirus pandemic, MBF President Richard J. Grahn said, “Given the related demand and urgency for civil legal services, especially in regard to housing, benefits, healthcare, and education advocacy, the MBF Trustees felt it was essential to keep funding as close to previous levels as possible.”

MBF is one of three charitable entities that distributes funds generated by interest on lawyers' trust accounts to support direct legal services for homelessness prevention, domestic violence programs, education and healthcare advocacy, and immigration assistance.
