Mass Cultural Council Grants $10M to 183 Nonprofits
January 7, 2021 — The Mass Cultural Council yesterday announced that $9,960,600 in state funds have been awarded to 183 arts and cultural organizations across Massachusetts to help them recover economic losses sustained by the coronavirus pandemic.
The Mass Cultural Council (MCC) said 424 organizations applied for the grants, seeking a total of $30.2 million. Grant awards ranged from $1,000 to a maximum of $100,000.
"For 10 months, Mass Cultural Council worked diligently to understand and document the economic devastation the cultural sector is facing from COVID-19," said David T. Slatery, MCC’s acting executive director. "The Governor understands that a thriving cultural sector is key to restoring the state’s economy to pre-pandemic levels, and recognized Mass Cultural Council as the key partner to implement his plan to deliver relief efficiently and effectively."
Since the pandemic hit the state last March Massachusetts nonprofit cultural organizations reported $484 million in lost revenue, according to MCC, and 62% laid off or furloughed employees or reduced their wages and/or hours, affecting 30,616 employees.
