Arc of South Norfolk and Lifeworks Inc. Complete Merger

Two Westwood nonprofits, The Arc of South Norfolk and Lifeworks Inc., on Friday announced that they finalized a merger and are now called Lifeworks.

“The past few months finalizing the details of the merger has been an incredible way to look ahead at the future of Lifeworks and how we plan on building new partnerships, providing enhanced person-centered supports and continuing our relentless advocacy for the individuals we serve,” said Daniel Burke, CEO of Lifeworks.

When the merger, intended to achieve operational efficiencies, was announced in the summer, there would be no layoffs as a result of the merger and no programs would close, although some vacant positions would not be filled. Prior to the merger, Arc of South Norfolk employed 151 people and lifeworks employed 277.

Seven Hills Foundation Gets $76K for Employment, Legal Help

Seven Hills Foundation, a Worcester-based health and human services nonprofit, recently was awarded $76,500 from the Massachusetts attorney general’s office to help its clients with employment and legal help.

The funds will provide $40,000 for the foundation's Family Services of Central Massachusetts and $36,500 for its ASPiRE! Program, the Worcester Business Journal reported.

Family Services of Central Massachusetts will use the funds for in-person mediation services across the Worcester area. The ASPiRE! Program, which provides occupational and rehabilitation services across central Massachusetts, will use its funds to give 30 clients in Devens, Milford or Worcester 20 to 30 hours of paid internship opportunities, including staff coaching support for participants, the paper reported.

Grants Available for Merrimack Valley Nonprofits Impacted by 2018 Gas Disaster

Columbia Gas recently pledged $10 million in grants to nonprofits offering programs in Andover, North Andover, and Lawrence as compensation for the September 2018 gas disaster that sparked 13 fires in the three towns that killed one person and forced 30,000 to evacuate their homes.

Funds will be administered by the Danvers-based Essex County Community Foundation, the Andover Townsman reported last week.

Grants ranging from $25,000 to $250,000 will be available, with a total of $2 million to be awarded annually for the next five years.

Nonprofits Invited to Free Leadership Learning Series

The Institute for Nonprofit Practice (INP) in Needham announced it has expanded its free Leadership Learning Series, recently launched to help nonprofits with timely, accessible, equity-focused information and resources.

“This is a pivotal moment for the social sector. We need to show up with as much support as possible for organizations, their staff, and their leaders—especially BIPOC leaders—to help them sustain themselves and their work today and in the future,” said INP President and CEO Yolanda Coentro.

Upcoming sessions will be held on organizational recovery (Oct. 29), leading for good (Nov. 10), contingency planning (Nov. 19), and mindful leadership (Dec. 3), among other topics.

The series will continue through June. Details.

Free Webinar for Nonprofits on Employee Engagement During COVID-19

Unemployment Services Trust (UST) recently announced that it will offer a free webinar for nonprofits on employee engagement and mental wellness. During COVID-19 that present strategies for communicating with a remote staff, updating company policies, and recognizing the impact of isolation on employees.

The webinar is the latest in a series that have showcased expertise relating to telecommuting strategies, nonprofit sustainability, and how to prepare for re-entry to the workplace.
