March 30, 2021 — Berkshire Agricultural Ventures, a nonprofit based in Great Barrington that works to enhance growth of food entrepreneurs in the Berkshire region, recently announced that Glenn Bergman has been named interim director of the organization.

Bergman succeeds Cynthia Pansing, who served as executive director of Berkshire Agricultural Ventures (BAV) for nearly four years.

"I'm thrilled to be assisting the staff and board with the transition of our next chapter. BAV is truly a gem of an organization," Bergman said.

Bergman has worked in the food industry since 1980, first as a chef faced with the challenge of how to purchase local food directly from farmers. He ran the Weavers Way food co-op in Philadelphia for 11 years, which reached 8,000 member households.

A long-term, part-time resident of Stockbridge, Bergman currently splits his time between homes in Philadelphia and Great Barrington.

Most recently, Bergman ran, Philabundance, a Philadelphia food bank, for five years. During that time he expanded a culinary job training program with a $12 million capital campaign to support building a community kitchen that provides meals to people in need.

Bergman earned a master’s degree in public health from Temple University.

Originally a program of other organizations, BAV became a nonprofit in 2017.

To accomplish its mission, BAV offers sustainable local investment mechanisms and technical assistance options to help move the Berkshire region toward food security, fostering agricultural ventures fosters and supporting food and farming enterprises that help strengthen the community.

Last year, BAV received a grant from a local family foundation that has enabled it to provide zero-interest, forgivable loans and grants to farmers to help them overcome challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic.

For the year ending Dec. 31, 2019, BAV reported $528,000 in revenue, of which $523,000 came from contributions and grants, and $410,000 in expenses, according to its most recently available federal tax filing.
